#145 Dawn Redwoods (Metasequoia glyptostroboides)

This pair of beautiful redwoods stands on either side of the backyard of a private home. They were planted around 2000 by the former homeowner, and have grown to be two of the largest of this species in Mecklenburg County. Dawn redwoods are native to a very small region in China.

  • Ecological Value: Dawn Redwoods are tolerant of pollution and can even be used as street trees. The species was first discovered from fossil records, not living plants. The first living Dawn Redwood was discovered during a plant expedition to China in the 1940s.
