TREASURE TREES

#028 European Sweet Chestnut (Castanea sativa)

Little is known about the history of this tree, but we do know it achieved Treasure Tree status in 1995 and has been confirmed still standing. The program needs to confirm whether this is a European chestnut or the American variety, but American chestnut is now rare due to devastation caused by Chestnut blight. Both European and American varieties are susceptible to this disease.
